Courtesy Visit of Kingdom of Denmark Ambassador

Mr Ole Thonke Ambassador of the Kingdom of Denmark newly accredited to Seychelles, paid a courtesy call on Minister for Minister for Agriculture, Climate Change and Environment Flavien Joubert on 20th April 2021. The Honorary Consul for Denmark Mr Basil Soundy accompanied the Ambassador on his visit.

The Minister and the Ambassador had the opportunity to share country experiences and discuss several issues related to the environment, energy also agriculture. Denmark has a large developed agricultural sector, and in their possible areas for cooperation were discussed especially improving food standards, and training for veterinarians and other technical personnel. Also discussed, were Denmark and Seychelles’ approach to Climate change. These were discussed in the context of the UNFCC Nationally determined contribution review and upcoming COP 26 Conference: it was agreed that Seychelles and Denmark can exchange on various items relating to renewable energy and also agree on common positions regarding global climate goals. Denmark as pointed out by the Ambassador is aiming for 70% renewable energy, and can bring valuable experience on how this can be done at national level. Environmental management approaches, in particular the possibility of government working with the private businesses, were also discussed, and it was pointed out that Denmark is very experienced in incineration of waste, a subject that Seychelles is evaluating and is likely to embark upon in future.

The Minister and the Ambassador agreed to share information on the various topics discussed and explore possibilities through their respective teams to develop cooperation in some of these areas.
